Honestly, I always wanted to be a rock star. Yeah, who doesn't right?
Growing up I watched my older brother playing with his local band, belting out Led Zeppelin songs in his tight leather pants (don't judge it was the 80s). But I could never imagine doing it myself. I was the painter and writer, and way more civilized than that haha.
While writing this album I imagined I'm out on tour, in a loud club with screaming fans. It's really late on a Saturday night. The club is pretty
small and it's way too loud. The old wood floor is stained with beer and crappy food.
The obsessed crowd is going nuts. Mosh pit? Maybe, probably. Tons of merch sold and tickets sold out for the next 6 months. Everyone knows the words to the songs, hands in the air singing along.
Shut Up It's Me (my band) is playing the tightest set of our lives. EPIC!
So that's the fantasy. What about the songs?
The songs on this album are the closest to the actual me, and my everyday feelings. Not all of them actually, but most of them. Some of them are about secrets that I've never told anyone. I guess that's what songwriting can be sometimes: getting vulnerable and screaming the secrets out loud.
Playing it safe is not me (mostly). As the album developed I thought f**k it and just went for it. ROCK VOL. 1 is me telling you everything. Don't judge me for it, or do. Whatever.
THE SOUND
REAL GUITARS. REAL DRUMS. MIC'D AMPS.
The goal of ROCK VOL. 1 was pure organic sound. Everything could be played by a band, live onstage. Two guitars, a bass player and a drummer. Raw, pure rock n' roll baby! Fender Strat, Gibson Sg / Les Paul. Vox, Marshall and Orange amps. A small punky drum set with a blistering loud snare.
The entire album is produced old school. We let the organic sound of the instruments set the tone for the soundscape. Not much was done in post to enhance anything.
Ok, sometimes we made everything louder. No, it's not the loudness wars of the 70s and 80s, but we turned everything up anyway. Why not?

Dude, the world really feels like it has you in a straight jacket sometimes, right? As much as we feel somewhat independent and want to be heard, it can be difficult to find the energy and ambition. We have to be cautious, pay bills, stay cool.
Well, screw that!
This song is my fantasy about tearing it all up, fighting back, having all the juice we need to never sit back and take it. Maybe you're young right now and are unconstrained. Cool for you. Or maybe you're fantasizing about when you were young without all the limitations and boundaries. Who cares what will happen!
